The school Ofsted inspection in September 2014 found that the children ‘are exceptionally eager to learn,’ and that the school has an ‘excellent climate for learning’
All our children have access to a broad and balanced curriculum. Regardless of gender, race, religion, age or ability. It seeks to prepare our children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life in modern Britain.
We actively promote fundamental British values whilst also developing mutual respect of different cultures and beliefs and we aim to do this through creative, active, relevant and fun approaches to teaching and learning.
We believe in the importance of providing relevant, meaningful learning experiences centred around play and investigation as well as directed focused teacher led learning.
All children can access their learning because of the teachers’ focused assessment for learning. We no longer have fixed ability groups. Grouping is fluid and dependent on which stage each child is in their learning journey.
All foundation subjects are taught with opportunities through Sports Funding for specialist sports coaches to come into school eg Year 1 tennis coaching, Year R and Year 2 football coaching. We also have the puppetman, HCC music performance in school.
The curriculum has opportunities for visits and “hand on” real enjoyable learning and SMSC experiences for all year groups. To prepare for these there have ben opportunities to involve parents and encourage homework preparation for topics. Visits: Year R Hillier’s and Longdown Activity Farm, Year 1 Beaulieu Motor Museum, Testwood Lakes, Bournemouth Oceanarium and day on the beach, Year 2 Beaulieu Countryside Trust, Portchester Castle, Nurture Group visit to Pizza Express.
In addition we provide
Special topic days such as Year 2 space day, Year1 build a home afternoon with parents (DT focus) and Harvest supper preparation and Year R Chinese New Year.
2 Special event weeks a year to focus mainly on writing but with other curriculum areas included eg Mud and Stick week to focus on instructions and make it, do it, write it – “Spells and Potions week” to focus on traditional stories, instructions and writing outside to encourage boys writing and “Fantastic Fox and Wicked Wolves Week” where the focus was on bad characters in stories, descriptive language, dance and drama.
Enrichment – local cluster and masterclasses eg dance, drama, environmental awareness
International week to focus on creative arts from other countries with the opportunity for creativity with music – African drums and dance, Bollywood dance and art across the school.
Sports week at the end of July with children having experience of different sports – tag rugby, street dance, golf and yoga.
After school clubs – sports, choir, drama and song performance, yoga, running club, apparatus club, recorder and gardening club continue to be run by our staff or outside coaches.
All our topics have a ‘hook’ at the beginning to draw in children’s interest and an outcome at the end which may involve a visit, sharing work or a special day planned to bring together all our learning.
